Guide

Finding an affordable therapist

Therapy can cost less than the sticker price. Try these in order.

1. Check your benefits

  • Look up your yearly amount for psychologists, counsellors or social workers.
  • Note which titles your plan covers. Not every plan covers every counsellor.
  • Ask HR about an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Many offer a few free sessions.

2. Ask for a sliding scale

  • Many therapists keep some lower-fee spots. Just ask.
  • Counselling students and newer counsellors often charge less, with supervision.
  • University training clinics may offer low-cost sessions.

3. Look at free and public options

  • Your province may fund some counselling. Ask your doctor or call 811 in BC.
  • Community health centres and nonprofits may offer free or low-cost counselling.
  • Group programs cost less per person than one-to-one.

4. Find a good fit

  • Ask: "Have you worked with adults with ADHD?"
  • Book a free intro call when offered.
  • It is fine to try someone else if it doesn't feel right.

5. Keep your receipts

Some therapy costs may count as a medical expense on your taxes. Check the CRA rules or ask a tax preparer.
